Comix Guild: Build A Comic!

In this 6-part class, students will make a folded and stapled comic in the classic comic style including story, panels, word balloons: the whole shebang!

Inspired by the books “Cartooning” by Ivan Brunetti and “Making Comics” by Lynda Barry, plus Teaching-Artist, Ariel Martian's own experiences making comics, students will go through the process of designing characters, writing their story, and creating a 4-8 page staple-bound comic. The end results in a final comic size of 8.5" x 7”, (a legal size sheet of paper folded in half).

This class includes weekly exercises that help get the creative juices flowing and help develop the skills needed to visually tell a story. The comics we create in the course will be drawn by hand in pencil and then inked. Finally, we’ll discuss options for printing and distributing your work.

Chagall used bold colors, floating figures, and unusual perspectives to create a world that feels emotional and magical rather than realistic. In this session we will learn about Chagall’s unique style, inspired by dreams, memories, and village life, while creating our own original composition. We’ll experiment with bold color, symbolism, layered imagery, and playful perspectives to create artwork that feels imaginative and personal.

This is a great time to celebrate Father's Day as we use memories as inspiration to build meaning through art!

Participants under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. The Neon Cow Bar will have wine, and beer available for purchase by participants over age 21. (Outside alcohol prohibited.)

For Ages 16+

Before “snapshots” from the early box cameras all the way up to our present day phone cameras, people drew portraits of family members and strangers in their small pocket size sketchpads.

Now you can learn these essentials of portraiture in this informative and accessible day-long workshop, suited for both beginners and those with more experience.

Instructor-led exercises and demonstrations begin the day, with students practicing the basic forms and proportions of the human head. A live model will be present during the second half of the workshop for the ultimate opportunity to hone your craft with life drawing. With personalized instructor feedback, you'll sharpen your skills and gain confidence in rendering life-like portraits. Students bring their own drawing pad (11” x 14” 80 lb. weight paper or higher).  All other materials for this class are provided. Students will work with pencil, various charcoals, and other dry black mediums.

Join teaching artist, Alix Rondy, on a guided adventure with brush and canvas. Participants will create a unique 11”x 14" painting based on a common theme.

This month's theme will explore the strange and colorful world of Picasso portraits!   His paintings did not stray from reality simply to create chaos- his abstractions gave us insights into new ways of seeing what is in front of us. Students will briefly study some works by Picasso, mainly his red beret portraits, and create their own original portraits - based on his style. Feel free to bring a photo to work off if you wish!

Participants under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. The Neon Cow Bar will have wine, and beer available for purchase by participants over age 21. (Outside alcohol prohibited.)
