Saturday & Sunday (June 13 & 14): 12:00 – 4:00 PM

In this four-day, hands-on workshop, teaching artist Matt Presutti will guide participants through the foundational techniques of handmade paper, with an emphasis on sustainable practices. Whether you’re new to papermaking or looking to deepen your process, this workshop offers both structure and space to explore.

Day 1: Foundations Learn the basics of pulp preparation, beater operation, and sheet formation.

Day 2: Material Exploration Work with rag paper, recycled materials, and natural fibers.

Days 3 & 4: Open Studio + Expansion The weekend sessions shift into a more flexible, exploratory format. Participants are encouraged to bring their own materials, collaborate on shared pulp batches, and develop individual projects. This is a time to experiment, connect, and push your ideas further.

Special Feature: Fiber & Dye Garden Research

As part of the workshop, participants will attend a presentation on an ongoing fiber-and-dye garden experiment conducted through Ohio University. This research investigates the potential of regionally grown plants for papermaking and natural dyes—offering a glimpse into emerging, place-based material systems and the future of sustainable art practices in Appalachia.

Throughout the workshop, you’ll gain a deeper understanding of papermaking as both a craft and a contemporary art practice—rooted in sustainability, transformation, and creative reuse.

Chagall used bold colors, floating figures, and unusual perspectives to create a world that feels emotional and magical rather than realistic. In this session we will learn about Chagall’s unique style, inspired by dreams, memories, and village life, while creating our own original composition. We’ll experiment with bold color, symbolism, layered imagery, and playful perspectives to create artwork that feels imaginative and personal.

This is a great time to celebrate Father's Day as we use memories as inspiration to build meaning through art!

Participants under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. The Neon Cow Bar will have wine, and beer available for purchase by participants over age 21. (Outside alcohol prohibited.)

Instructor-led exercises and demonstrations begin the day, with students practicing the basic forms and proportions of the human head. A live model will be present during the second half of the workshop for the ultimate opportunity to hone your craft with life drawing. With personalized instructor feedback, you'll sharpen your skills and gain confidence in rendering life-like portraits. Students bring their own drawing pad (11” x 14” 80 lb. weight paper or higher).  All other materials for this class are provided. Students will work with pencil, various charcoals, and other dry black mediums.
