For Ages 16+
This class is a great opportunity to start your journey into functional ceramics. The potter’s wheel is a useful tool with a long history. In this class you will learn all the fundamentals of throwing pottery, from preparing the clay to glazing the surface.
Demonstrations include cylinders, mugs, handles, bowls and trimming. Available Open Studio time outside of regular scheduled classes, assures that you will have plenty of time to practice your new skills.
Tools and materials for this class are included with registration.

A251 Pottery II: Garden Pots
with Margaret Gustafan

**Dairy Barn Members at the Individual Level or higher enjoy a 10% Discount**
For Ages 16+
This class teaches wheel throwing and soft slab construction methods, along with carving and stamping techniques to create durable ceramic vessels and sculptures for the garden. Participants will explore surface design using additive and subtractive processes, in addition to a variety of ways to utilize glazes. Students will gain new hand-building and wheel-throwing skills and take home several flower pots, a fairy house, and herb markers. All garden pottery made during this workshop will be glazed and fired. This eight-week class features instructor demonstrations, hands-on learning, and available Open Studio time outside of regularly scheduled classes.
This class is best suited for those who have basic wheel-throwing skills and feel comfortable wedging, centering, and throwing small to medium-sized cylinders. (Equivalent to The Dairy Barn’s Pottery I: Intro to Wheel Throwing class.)

A253 Fundamentals of Drawing

For Ages 16+
This class is designed especially for those who want to learn how original drawings are created “from scratch", how to apply basic and essential drawing techniques to their drawings, and how to draw with confidence as they develop their own individual style.
All students of every skill level are welcome. Whether this is your first drawing class or you want to dust off skills you’ve already acquired, you will receive the support and personal attention you need to enhance and advance your drawing abilities.
Class content includes short drawing exercises to clarify the drawing concept covered, along with longer still-life set-ups where those concepts are applied. The instructor provides demonstrations and individual instruction upon request. Your questions and observations will form a valuable part of your class experience.
Students bring their own 11" x 14" Drawing Pad with at least 24 sheets of 80 lb. weight paper. All other materials are provided.

B418 Create to Donate: Ceramic Bowl Glazing
with Chip Wagner

Family Friendly! Ages: 8-100 (Those under age 18 must be accompanied by an adult.) Please register all participants.
Join us for a hands-on, creative experience where you can make a difference! We invite community members of all ages and skill levels to come together to glaze handbuilt ceramic bowls. The finished bowls will be fired and donated to support local charitable events. Whether you’re an experienced ceramicist or new to clay, this workshop is a wonderful opportunity to learn, create, and give back.
Teaching Artist, Chip Wagner, will guide participants through the process of using brush-on ceramic glazes to give vibrant colors, designs and decoration to bisque-fired ceramic bowls. Your unique creations will the be fired in The Dairy Barn's kilns and donated to local charitable initiatives, including the Athens Area Mediation Service annual Souper Bowl fundraiser. This series of making and glazing events are available at no cost to participants, though pre-registration is required to ensure we have space for everyone. By participating, you’ll not only learn new artistic techniques but also contribute to a cause that helps strengthen our community. Come with your friends, family, or just yourself, all are welcome!

For Ages 16+
This class is for all students interested in advancing their painting skills and is intended for any skill level and experience. Beginners and more experienced painters alike benefit from class exercises and in-studio personal instruction designed to build confidence in their individual choices while gaining a solid understanding of painting fundamentals.
Using still life set-ups, each of the eight classes covers step-by-step, essential elements found in successful paintings, including but not limited to...
- How color and value work together to build form.
- How composition, perspective, and scale combine for the best results.
Special focus will be on how to manage color and enhance the overall experience of painting. Addressed early in the class will be the proper care and maintenance of painting tools, and the differences between painting mediums, brushes, and canvases.

Discover the satisfaction of observing the natural world and translating it into beautiful, tangible art. Teaching Artist Mary Steinberg shares a process that combines reference images and imagination to create unique landscapes that capture the essence of a place’s look and feel.
This workshop welcomes any experience level, especially beginners. Students will learn through instructor demonstration and hands-on practice during this relaxed, afternoon-long workshop. Create an 11” x 14” stretched canvas landscape painting that can be taken home to be cherished forever. All supplies and materials for this class will be provided.
In this workshop, you will learn how to:
- Effectively use several reference pictures into one cohesive artwork
- Observe and capture light, color shifts, and other details
- Create dynamic compositions using perspective
- Simplify your color palette for vibrant results
- Maintain and clean your tools for long-lasting use

B413 Fiber & Fashion: Create a Nuno Felted Scarf

For Ages 16+
Welcome to the art of Nuno! Nuno felting is a cold-water wet-felting process that uses an open-weave fabric upon which colorful Merino wool roving designs are incorporated.
In this class, students will learn to use wet felting techniques to marry a length of natural, loosely woven material with merino wool to create a unique and stylish fashion statement. The resulting colorful and cozy scarf, adorned with fringe, buttons, or a simple shawl pin is destined to beautify your wardrobe.
Students are asked to bring 2-3 old bath-sized towels with them, and all other supplies and materials will be provided. This class is suitable for brand-new beginners and those with fiber arts experience, alike!

A252 Handbuilding With Clay

Ages 16+
Clay is fabulously versatile and can facilitate all kinds of self-expression. This class serves as a great introduction to the material. The techniques demonstrated are flexible for students interested in either (or both!) functional and sculptural forms.
This eight-week class features instructor demonstrations, hands-on learning, and available Open Studio time outside of regularly scheduled classes. Students will learn how to pinch, coil, and slab-build forms with an emphasis on establishing solid construction skills. The last two classes will be devoted to enriching surfaces with glazes, underglazes, and engobes.
