A311 Painting II: Beyond the Basics

Designed for students with prior painting experience, this course offers a deeper dive into painting fundamentals while encouraging experimentation. Working in oil, participants will explore color, value, scale, and composition through intentionally designed still life setups.
Each class blends guided exercises with individual feedback, helping students strengthen what they know and try new techniques with confidence. While the class focuses on oil painting, concepts can apply to any color medium! Perfect for painters ready to refine their skills and develop a more intentional, expressive style.

A307 Pottery II: Jars & Lidded Vessels

For Ages 16+
Pottery II offers students an opportunity to build upon wheel-throwing fundamentals and explore new forms and techniques. This eight-week class features instructor demonstrations, hands-on learning, and available Open Studio time outside of regularly scheduled classes.
Demonstrations will include a variety of ways to create lidded forms. Students will learn how to measure using calipers and ways to throw, trim or hand-build, creative knobs and handles. Finally, students in this class will have an opportunity to create a butter keeper, a unique piece of tableware with a special bell-shaped lid to keep room-temperature butter fresh.
This class is best suited for those who have basic wheel-throwing skills and feel comfortable wedging, centering, and throwing small to medium-sized cylinders. (Equivalent to The Dairy Barn Pottery I Intro to Wheel Throwing class.)

A308 Handbuilding II: 3D Forms

For Ages 16+
Yay for clay! This is an 8-week handbuilding class that explores sculptural construction techniques, surface manipulation, and observational modeling. A series of increasingly challenging projects, will allow students to develop their abilities, problem solve structural and sculptural issues and create convincing three-dimensional forms.
Students will have the opportunity to explore a variety of construction methods and learn how to choose the techniques best suited to different forms. They will experiment with additive, subtractive, impressed, pierced, and slipped surface treatments while developing strategies for rendering realistic textures such as skin, folds, hair, bark, and other natural surfaces.
Projects include a series of texture sample tiles, a micro-to-macro sculpture inspired by an everyday object, and a life-sized human hand sculpted from observation. The final two class sessions will be devoted to glazing, painting, and finishing work as appropriate.
This class is designed for students who are already comfortable with basic handbuilding techniques and are ready to further develop their sculptural skills.

A315 Comix Guild: Build a Comic
with Ariel Martian

For Ages 16+
In this 4 part intensive we'll make a folded and stapled comic in the classic comic style with a cover, story, panels, word balloons: the whole shebang.Inspired by the books “Cartooning” by Ivan Brunetti, and “Making Comics” by Lynda Barry, plus the instructor's own experiences making comics, students go through the process of designing characters, writing their story, and creating a 4-8 page staple-bound comic.
This course will also include drawing exercises to help get the creative juices flowing, and help hone the skills needed to visually tell a story. The comics created in the course will be drawn by hand in pencil, and then inked and staple bound. The clas will clminate in discussing options for printing and distributing your comic.
Students should purchase their own mixed-media sketchbook in size of choice.
