Join teaching artist Meta Van Nostran for a hands-on day (10:00 AM- 3:00 PM) of fiber preparation and Appalachian textile traditions!
Participants will explore wool-processing through demonstrations, conversations, and hands-on fiber practices.
10:00–10:20 AM: Welcome + Introduction Meta Van Nostran and Mary Jeanne Goss
- Appalachian fiber traditions
- Wool, flax, cotton, wartime needs, WPA guilds, and regional making traditions
10:20–11:15 AM: Skirting + Washing Raw Fleece
- Hands-on demonstration and participation: Skirting a fleece
- Washing Cheviot wool
- Discussion of lanolin, fleece quality, and wool preparation
11:15 AM–12:00 PM: Sheep Breeds + Fiber History Discussion
- Fine, medium, and coarse fibers
- Sheep breeds and fiber uses
- Plant and animal fibers through history
12:00–1:00 PM: Community Potluck Lunch
1:00–1:45 PM: Teasing + Fiber Preparation
- Historical textiles from home-spun fibers
- Spinning wheel overview
- Fiber resources, books, and materials
1:45–2:45 PM: Carding Wool into Rolags
- Hand carders
- Drum carders
- Preparing wool for spinning
- Rolag making
2:45–3:00 PM: Closing Conversation + July 25 Spin In gathering introduction
