B449 Create to Donate: Handbuild Clay Bowls
with Chip Wagner
Family Friendly! Ages: 8-100 (Those under age 18 must be accompanied by an adult.) Please register all participants.
Join us for a hands-on, creative experience where you can make a difference! We invite community members of all ages and skill levels to come together and create handbuilt ceramic bowls that will be donated to support local charitable events. Whether you’re an experienced ceramicist or new to clay, this workshop is a wonderful opportunity to learn, create, and give back.
Teaching Artist Chip Wagner will guide participants through the process of shaping slabs into bisque-mold forms, then stamping, carving, and personalizing the details of their bowls. Your unique creations will then be fired in The Dairy Barn's kilns and donated to local charitable initiatives including Athens Area Mediation Service's Souper Bowl and Amesville Elementary's Empty Bowls event benefiting the Athens County Food Pantry. This series of making and glazing events is available at no cost to participants, though pre-registration is required to ensure we have space for everyone. By participating, you’ll not only learn new artistic techniques but also contribute to a cause that helps strengthen our community. Come with your friends, family, or just yourself, all are welcome!

**This workshop has multiple dates and times.***
Thursday & Friday (June 11 & 12): 9:00 AM – 3:00 PM
Saturday & Sunday (June 13 & 14): 12:00 – 4:00 PM
In this four-day, hands-on workshop, teaching artist Matt Presutti will guide participants through the foundational techniques of handmade paper, with an emphasis on sustainable practices. Whether you’re new to papermaking or looking to deepen your process, this workshop offers both structure and space to explore.
Day 1: Foundations Learn the basics of pulp preparation, beater operation, and sheet formation.
Day 2: Material Exploration Work with rag paper, recycled materials, and natural fibers.
Days 3 & 4: Open Studio + Expansion The weekend sessions shift into a more flexible, exploratory format. Participants are encouraged to bring their own materials, collaborate on shared pulp batches, and develop individual projects. This is a time to experiment, connect, and push your ideas further.
Special Feature: Fiber & Dye Garden Research
As part of the workshop, participants will attend a presentation on an ongoing fiber-and-dye garden experiment conducted through Ohio University. This research investigates the potential of regionally grown plants for papermaking and natural dyes—offering a glimpse into emerging, place-based material systems and the future of sustainable art practices in Appalachia.
Throughout the workshop, you’ll gain a deeper understanding of papermaking as both a craft and a contemporary art practice—rooted in sustainability, transformation, and creative reuse.
