Quilt National ‘23 exhibiting artist, Alison Schwabe, presents a slide lecture and Q&A, on the process of personal artistic development. Alison details how personal influences, combined with evolving techniques, can be developed into impactful themes for one’s own artwork.

Landscape and geographic change have been the starting point of Alison’s creative practice for over five decades. In this lecture, participants will learn how to identify, observe and record their own sources of inspiration to translate into artworks. Alison will share specific fiber arts techniques, focusing on the importance of adaptation and exploration of materials, to best serve the chosen theme. The Q&A portion of this event will allow participants to get specific insights into the challenges and successes of long-lasting conceptual designs.

“Nothing stays the same forever…over time, marks and surface textures appear, resulting from interaction with the world and its influences. This concept I call ‘Timetracks’, and it led to a whole series of mixed media works.” -- Alison Schwabe

In this virtual workshop, students will learn stitched shibori techniques from Quilt National ‘23 exhibiting artist, Sue Cortese. Shibori uses pressure as a resist, by asserting pressure on the fabric, it will remain white. The rest of the cloth will turn blue with exposure to the indigo dye. Each type of shibori stitch uses pressure differently and creates its own unique patterning.

Students will learn all the essential steps for this technique; planning, drawing out a pattern, stitching, and gathering. Following the workshop participants will receive access to a recording of the class and demonstrations to review and solidify their skills. Recordings will be available for 6 weeks, so students have plenty of time to try out a variety of designs.

In this workshop, students will learn shibori fabric dyeing techniques including pole-wrapping (Arashi), clamping (Itajime), bound (Kumo), and stitched shibori.  Shibori uses pressure as a resist, by asserting pressure on the fabric, it will remain white. The rest of the cloth will turn blue with exposure to the indigo dye. Each type of shibori uses pressure differently and creates its own unique patterning.

Hybrid virtual and in-person learning allows students plenty of time to create their designs. The first workshop day will meet via Zoom and cover the essentials of stitched shibori; planning, drawing out a pattern, stitching, and gathering. Students can stitch out as many pieces as they want prior to the second class covering the rest of the techniques and dyeing. The second workshop day will be in-person at The Dairy Barn during the closing weekend of Quilt National ‘23 and features demonstrations of the bound styles, Arashi, and Itajime. There will be time to experiment with all methods before starting the dyeing process. Indigo dye transforms with oxidation, so students will literally watch the dyed pieces change colors while taking turns in dipping their work, layering the color for the desired depth of shade, and helping each other achieve exciting results.

Can’t make it to The Dairy Barn for indigo dyeing with Sue Cortese but want to learn all about making stitched shibori patterns? Students can sign-up for just the virtual learning component!

Students participating in the virtual class will have access to the recording for 6 weeks following the event.

Registration for both virtual and in-person events includes exhibition admission for Quilt National ‘23.
